Nate Navasca

I am a graphic designer.

At the moment, I am a senior studying graphic design at Virginia Tech. I used to major in architecture, but at some point I ditched floor plans and models for layout and typography.

I still tend to think like an architect though, but with an added obsession over typography. When I’m designing, I place a heavy emphasis on design thinking, problem solving, modernism, typography and structure.

Design Thinking

Use your brain(storm).

I love when design has research and process behind it. Great design comes from a genuine understanding of the problem at hand and a willingness to take risks with iteration after iteration.

Problem Solving

How do I fix it?

I’m not a decorator. I’m a problem solver. I enjoy the challenge of finding a new problem and racking my brain about how to fix it with design. As troublesome as problems can be, without them I would be out of a job and very bored.

“Less, but better.”

graphy

Don’t mask the content.

Choosing a typeface is only a fraction of the journey. Typography is about expressing the content. Whether that’s made through tiny adjustments in kerning or through a more experimental approach, it should always serve to enhance the content, not mask it.

Structure

Type shouldn’t be homeless.

Architects make houses for humans. I make houses for type and image. Grids are a powerful tool, but like a modernist house, the structure shouldn’t define it, the people and the objects inside do.
